An Emergency Heating and Food Donation Drive

It is a struggle to keep poorly insulated homes heated and food on the table, for the 300+ families that are caring for foster children. Unfortunately, LOWO, the reservation's foster care agency, is getting calls for help daily but has nothing left in its budget for such emergencies. These families are in need of wood, propane, electric heaters and food and at this point LOWO must rely solely upon its emergency fund which gets very few donations. During winter this is especially urgent as temperatures often drop well below zero on the reservation. If you can donate a check, an electric heater, or nonperishable foods, please let me know and I'll add your donations to the tally below. The local propane companies require a minimum order of $125 to deliver so the need for monetary donations is great and will continue through the winter months. If enough of us donate in small amounts we can make this happen, and every check, whether it is $5 or $500 will make a big impact on rez families that are cold and/or hungry.

A year ago this month, I made my first journey to Pine Ridge Reservation. There’s always a sense of excitement touching down on the tarmac, knowing a new world, one which you would never otherwise have the opportunity to explore so intimately, is almost in reach.

Like the rest of the team, I had read the statistics: 65 to 80 percent unemployment rates, rampant alcoholism, obesity and an education system struggling to provide the basic tools for learning.

Get Involved: How to Help the Children of the Plains

Two flights and a two-hour drive later, I was driving through the Badlands with a duffle bag, a camera and a whole lot of curiosity. En route to Manderson, S.D., a town with just fewer than 650 residents, where more than 60 percent of them live below the poverty line, I drive through miles of plains. The land speaks, telling a story of oppression and resilience, one that I begin to understand better after spending days and weeks with parents and children, elders and spiritual leaders.

On the outside, the public housing units were worn, anywhere from 30 to 40 years old. A young father, no more than 23, told me he was covering the windows with sheets of plastic to keep the propane-fueled heat inside the home. He said the windows were installed upside down and often the family runs out of money and can’t afford to pay for warmth. He went on to tell me that heat was a luxury and some months he must choose between feeding his family of five or having heat.

Inside the roughly 300 square miles of the reservation are a handful of Oglala Lakota Sioux, who with their spirit, courage and delicate pride, will change the way I see many things. Trip after trip, I am welcomed into homes. I am told I am family. I meet with educators. A spiritual leader sends me back to New York City with braided sweet grass to bring positive energy into my home. I’m smudged, purified by the burning of sage, invited to attend meals and pow wows. I learn of the history and strength of a people, the realities and courage, but what touches me the most are the children.

Through the smiles and tears, hope and innocence, there is power in these young people – all desperate, in their own ways, to be heard. Thirteen-year-old Robert wants to be the first Native American president and buy his grandmother, who raises him and his seven cousins, a beautiful house. Tashina, 6, wants clean water for her family and bubble gum. Louise, 12, struggles to cope with addiction in her home and prays for the strength to go on and 17-year-old Alaina sings with courage through the chapter of her life she is leaving and the next she is entering.

It’s easy to speculate why the despair often outshines the valor when talking about Pine Ridge Reservation, but anyone who is given the opportunity to be immersed in Lakota culture, to see first-hand the humor and love, cannot leave unchanged.

When I began research for the Lakota Moon Series I ran across a website that deals with donations for the people of Pine Ridge Reservation. Reading further, I discovered this place in the center of our country is one of the poorest places in the nation.

I cannot imagine children who have no school supplies, people without winter coats, families who know hunger—not in this country. There are other places in the United States where poverty is paramount, but few are so disturbingly neglected as Pine Ridge.

I bookmarked the sites that pertained to this and kept up with the issues, eventually joining and contributing to their drives. Anyone who is interested in helping, may go to their site at:

While there have been innovations and changes recently that the Lakota have taken to improve their lives, such as small business development, there is a long road ahead and my hope is that others will see their efforts and be willing to assist. What is needed here is education and industry. Providing the basic needs is essential.

They defeated the army and drove the white man away, thanks to Red Cloud and Crazy Horse's leadership, and until Washington officials broke the treaties and sent troupes in, they remained free on their lands.

My social conscience was stricken heavily by the horrible conditions these people live with and it boggles the brain to think of the money spent on foreign wars when we have so much need right here. When you read my books—and I hope you will—you will glimpse the true people of the Nations. They are a treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge we've only begun to tap.

Moon of Hard Winter is my newest book in the Lakota Moon Series and now available at Kindle and next month it will be out in print. This book deals with love, yes, but it also touches on the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, and though it is a time travel romance, I tried to infuse it with some great characters and address the terrible tragedy of December 29, 1890.

John Six Feathers believes the truth of what happened at Wounded Knee one-hundred and ten years ago has not been told. He wants to see the medals of honor given to soldier's who participated in the slaughter of women and children removed.

Faith Donahey believes the truth is more than just an overall picture, and her great-great grandfather deserves the medal of honor he received, despite what the Lakota say. A horrible accident on the highway, a spiritual intervention, and the truth as they knew it becomes the truth as they will tell their children and grandchildren. This is their story.

Coming next in this series will be a lighter story, though it deals with Little Big Horn, I promise more comedic relief and a spicier love story. Moon of Tender Grass will be Blue Crow's Story. A warrior who has lived among the white people, is torn by his love for the daughter of his adopted uncle, Eli Jackson, and his loyalty to the people of the Lakota. He rides with Crazy Horse to Greasy Grass Creek and participates in the battle where Custer is killed. His brothers and cousins die there, and his heart torn by the horrors of battle, he seeks refuge with the Jackson family once more, only to find everything has changed.

Look for this book to be released in late November.

When journalist Michael Kelly is exposed to the underbelly of the world of germ warfare and the endless possibilities for destruction that become apparent, he embarks on an investigation that leaves him numb, exposed and totally vulnerable.

This is a good read. The characters, as is par for a Michael Harvey book, are well defined, as is the plot. The plot, though a little muddled in places, never stretches my suspension of disbelief too far. That's my barometer for a good book.

Recommended.

Moon of Hard Winter Coming Soon

My upcoming book, hopefully to be released in July, is Moon of Hard Winter, the 4th book in The Lakota Moon Series. A slight departure from the other books in this series, Moon of Hard Winter is a time travel. The story line develops around the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.

Faith Donahey believes the truth is more than just an overall picture, and her great-great grandfather deserves the medal of honor he received, despite what the Lakota say. A horrible accident on the highway, a spiritual intervention, and the truth as they knew it becomes the truth as they will tell their children and their grandchildren down through time. This is a chronicle of their times and the events thereof.

While this is a love story, it is also a cautionary tale of people and how they learn from one another and grow to understand their similarities as well as their differences. Cultural barriers are breached as the vast wilderness swallows them in a tale of something so tainted and vilifying they must band together or be destroyed by the fear and hatred of one people and the unquiet desperation of another.

I loved writing this tale and found the research both riveting and heartbreaking.

Riveting in the respect of wanting to know more, to learn what, why and how one people can be so arrogant as to treat another people with such lethal disregard for their rights and their lives. Of course, there has always been greed. The deadliest of the deadly sins.

Heartbreaking for the obvious reasons. Anyone who has ever studied—even casually—the plight of the many Indian tribes in this nation must be touched by the wrongness of it. Whole clans slaughtered, their cultures and languages destroyed—and only a few remain. There have been many tales of a similar nature regarding the American Indians—Sand Creek Massacre comes to mind immediately. These and other atrocities echo stories from around the world. From Ireland to Scotland, India and many other places colonized by the British; to the Mongols, Viking and Saxon invasions, the Celts, the Romans… The list is endless, and in my quest to tell stories that depict the human condition as well as give a bit of history, I find this particular incident—Wounded Knee—a prime example of terrorist tactics.

And a most horrid blot on the honor of this country. To have actually given murdering soldiers Medals of Honor for killing women and children was—and remains—a shameful thing.

But that is another story for another day. I will regale you no further with my proverbial soap box. I only ask that you read my books with an unjaundiced eye and enjoy the story. And if, perhaps, your sense of justice is moved to cry "foul!" then I have done some good, I think.

My latest release in print only is Moon of Ripening, a story of love that overcomes hardship and struggle, as well as racial barriers. Thunder Heart, a Lakota warrior, saves the lives of two white women during Red Cloud's war. In doing so, he endangers his people who could easily become the target of the soldiers or encounter the wrath of Red Cloud who considers all white people his enemy. Of course, in the end, love prevails, as it always does in a romance book, but it's the getting there that is the essence of the tale. I loved researching and writing this one in particular...but the next one will probably become my favorite, as each book emerges from the darkness and my sense of accomplishment grows. There will be four more books in the Lakota Moon series and I sincerely hope you enjoy them all. This book is now available on Kindle!

"Last night has nothing to do with today, Tav. You’ve been promising to show me the ranch. What better way than to have me along while you do your chores?"

"Watch yourself, missy. I might put you to work."

"I’m game," came her snappy answer. "We have horses and cattle and sheep in the highlands. On a much smaller scale than this of course, but I’m no stranger to what you call wrangling. I’ve even mended a fence or two in my time."

"You? Mend fence?" Tav let a scoffing sound escape. That mistake cost him a stinging slap across the rear with a rawhide glove for his insolence. He turned and snatched the glove out of Nessa’s hand. "Lady, if you want me to turn you over my knee, right here, right now, in full sight of every man on this ranch, do that one more time."

"You sound so ferocious, Mactavish." She smiled wickedly. "Too bad I know you so well. You’d never dare—"

He didn’t know what made him do it. One minute he was holding her glove and glaring at her, the next minute he’d grabbed her around the waist and slung her over his shoulder. He headed for the barn. Nessa squirmed and squealed. He just held on firmly and slapped her shapely rear once when she wiggled so hard they almost fell in the mud.

Once in the shelter of the barn, he closed the wide double doors and turned to face her. Nessa had backed up to the far wall. There was no escape. He grinned. The woman was conveniently close to the ladder to the loft. Every frustration he’d felt for her from the moment he’d laid eyes on her, every sleepless night, and lust filled thought merged into one mindless drive. He took a step, then another, moving in on his prey.

Primeval hunger blinded him. Like a conquering clansman taking the spoils of war. She looked so defenseless, though she didn’t cower. Her eyes were trained on him—huge, startled, so blue no sky could match the shade. She held herself poised as though to run—or fight.

Tav’s blood surged, pushing him painfully against his zipper at the thought of wrestling her to the ground, tearing away the cloth that separated their flesh. Her lips parted slightly, tongue darting out to lick the corner of her mouth. God help him, he was going to ravish her.

He closed the distance, halting inches from her. One hand came up of its own volition, stroking the silky flesh of her throat. He heard a growling noise, not recognizing it as coming from his throat. Tracing the contours of her finely molded facial bones, he allowed his other hand to circle her nape, drawing her up toward his mouth.

"Stop, Tav. Please."

Her softly spoken plea barely registered as he took her lips, silencing her words. Nibbling at her lips, sucking them, pressuring them apart with his tongue, he mindlessly devoured her mouth, coming alive as she responded, stroking her tongue against his with the same frantic urgency.

He pressed her to the wall, lifting her to fit him, sliding a knee between her thighs. She closed her self around him and the damp heat of her seeped through their clothing, burning his muscled flesh as she moved against him.

Author Bio

I grew up in Southern California, but my heart has always been in the wide open plains of the Heartland. When I write, I see the images so clearly, it's as though I'm there. My stories flow from the heart, and when someone tells me the like my work, I am content. Sometimes I think I was born writing, and have been doing so since I could put pen to paper. My first efforts at short stories began when I was in the first grade, and I took a sabbatical to raise a husband and two sons, then returned to the craft I love.

I write for pleasure, mainly western historical with Native American Heroes, the occasional contemporary romance and also bit of whimsical fantasy. My heroes are always modeled after my late husband, whose Chickasaw heritage inspires me. Alpha heroes are the only kind I write, and they have to be compassionate, passionate and intelligent or they never make it to the page. My published work includes Native American Romance and I'm published in several contemporary anthologies as well. Along with writing, I've branched out to produce book trailer videos.

Rainwater! A Rare and Lovely Story!

This is a rare a lovely story, one that kept me turning the pages until I'd reached the end. And I wanted the story to go on, hated seeing the last page turn. Ms. Brown has veered from her usual fare, but in such an excellent way it gives me hope that she will write more of these stories! If you like a story that is strong on ideals and isn't afraid to tell it like it is, you will truly enjoy Rainwater.

A dying man, a lonely woman, a disabled child, all come together in this tale of courage and love in an absolute masterpiece. Not content with the love story, Ms. Brown has tackled social issues of the times, such as racial bigotry, hunger and famine during the depression of the nineteen-thirties and the ignorance of people as well as their innate kindness.

Ella Barron is a struggling single mother who takes in boarders to pay her way. Hard working and dedicated to her mentally challenged son, she is a shining example of courage and dignity. When Mr. Rainwater comes to board with her, she struggles to maintain her distance but the man is so compelling, so gentle, and most of all, takes such care with her boy, she finds herself drawn, despite her misgivings.

Mr. Rainwater isn't just a dying man looking for a corner to crawl into. He is a man whose strength of character shines in everything he does. In his own words, 'he wants the final days to mean something'.
To tell you more would spoil the story, so all I can do is advise you to read this book!

An intriguing book, well written. Read it straight though.

When a woman goes missing, her husband dead and their child left to the care of family, the person responsible is captured and imprisoned. They think he will never get out, but he does. And proclaims his innocence...and to some, he is innocent. On the grief-stricken families, he casts a shadow of anger and despair. Especially for the orphaned child, now grown, who is forced to re-examine his innocence or guilt.

Nancy Pickard has written a potent tale of love, hate, betrayal and forgiveness that kept this reader turning the pages. I literally could not put this book down. I had to know who-done-it for sure. I find the author's handling of the twists and turns of this story very competent, indeed.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The characters in this book are, for the most part, very well defined, but that doesn't help the plot much. I found it hard to follow why a person would go to so much trouble to entice the police into an investigation of a crime by planting wishy-washy clues. Clues so without foundation that the idea of figuring them out could not stretch my suspension of disbelief even an inch.

Too many circumstances were contrived, too much jumping to conclusions that didn't make sense considering the lack of evidence to support them. The author knew what she wanted, but couldn't quite get it on paper without giving away the fact that her story lacked credence.

I would have given this story two stars except the redeeming quality of the writing, despite the poorly contrived plot, shows great promise for this author. It gets three stars for effort and I will read this author's work again, hoping for better cohesiveness in plot formulation.

The Ends of the Earth

A man whose interests are bugs, insects and the research of same, is compelled to aid an old friend—who may or may not become much more to him romantically. While investigating a murder using his entomology to place the time of death, he calls in another old friend—who also may or may not become a romantic interest. While the two women bicker lightly over which of them should 'score' the absent-minded professor—who is strangely appealing in his less than romantic way—forces are afoot to destroy the evidence, and perhaps the main characters as well.

The story itself is well written, the personalities, though a bit quirky, are nicely handled and the plot is air tight. Once Mister Downs has determined how his book will end, I'm sure it will be a treat for mystery/thriller readers to enjoy.

I nearly gave it fewer stars because the ending didn't strike me as quite fair to the reader, but decided since the rest of the story was so gripping and well done, I couldn't bring myself to do less than five stars!

This 3rd book in the Dragons of Challon series by Deborah MacGillivray has not only sold out first printing before release and sold out second printing within five days of release! I find this quite believeable, knowing the quality of Ms. MacGillivray's work. This is yet another 5 star review for her lovely offering.

Ms. MacGillivray spins another glorious tale, and hits all the points with her usual élan.

Noel de Servian and Lady Skena MacIain are seeking peace and love in their lives. Holding the keep, Craigendan, she worries that a stronger force will take away her powers and leave her children without an inheritance. For his part, he is tired of war and anxious for a home of his own—a family to love.

This story has all the elements: adventure, love, joy, sorrow and, of course, unparalleled romance. There is mystery, as well, when it seems Skena’s husband is not dead…or is he? Haunted by his ghost, the lady fears for her children and herself as strange things begin to happen. Intrigue follows quickly as it becomes apparent that something – or someone is plotting….

Skena is a heroine in the finest tradition of Ms. MacGillivray’s story telling. She is smart and beautiful—but not in the traditional way. Skena has an inner beauty and poise, and she has courage as well.

The plot flows smoothly as this story explores so many emotions, and literally found that I simply couldn’t put it down. For those who may be afraid to take a chance on love, this book will absolutely convince you to never give up. Moon of the Falling Leaves is classically exquisite and I’ll treasure it forever.

I just finished one third of my new project and I'm very excited about this book. When Moon of the Falling Leaves was released and got such a terrific response, I decided this book should follow. Moon of Ripening is a love story, but also a story of survival. During Red Cloud's War, many white people were killed in response to the breaking of the treaty at Ft. Laramie in 1851. This is the story of one white woman's survival when captured by the Lakota. It is also the story of one Lakota Brave's torn loyalties when he finds himself caring about the woman. I will be posting more as this story progresses.

Though slow to start, a compelling thread of the story kept this reviewer engrossed and eventually I was intrigued by the complicated and somewhat bizarre plot. I applaud the author's ability to draw one into a fantasy without actually defining the fantasy. It leaves one to guess for oneself just what is afoot--a great and fun-filled read.

"White delivers a strong story"
I first read Diane Davis White about five years ago, a Gothic novella, and thought she showed great promise. Thus, I was eager to read her first novel. Moon of the Falling Leaves really shows an author coming into her own. There are not a lot of Indian writers out there currently, not many coming along, so it's nice to see White drawing on the heritage of her husband to carve out a niche for herself in this genre. It's a gentle tale that is sure to please people seeking this category of romance.

Set in the late 1800's America, Jessica Maxwell's life seems to be going from bad to worse. Her feckless husband insisted they could find a new future out west, and sets out on a journey with their four children to find a new home. Instead of a new life, Jessica is left a widow, with the winter coming on in the Rocky Mountains. The situation facing her is one she is not prepared to handle. She and the children are startled by the arrival of a stranger - a Lakota Warrior.

Swift Eagle has many reasons to hate the whites, but his visions lead him to the widow and her children. Despite his own pain and resentment, he cannot ignore the images that warn him he must rescue this woman. He intends to honor that, but nothing more, though he soon finds Jessica reaching his heart, a heart he thought he'd buried long ago. Even so, he feels his growing love is doomed because of the racial differences and barriers of the times.

White delivers a strong story, fraught with dangerous, harsh conditions of the periods and the inner turmoils that Swift Eagle and Jessica must overcome. The author draws on the emotions of the characters, makes you care for them. She touches your heart. Quite understandably, I am eager to see this talented author continue to grow with each story, and hope it's not too long until her next novel.

KNIGHT'S FORK - A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

Rowena Cherry has delivered yet another wonderful story. Her prose is delicious, giving you a visual of every scene just as though you were there. With all senses engaged, the reader finds he or she cannot stop turning pages.

Electra-Djerroldina is delectable, but she's married. Will Djarrhett, the Saurian Knight and presumed heir to the Dragon's throne, realize he loves her in time to save them both from the mechanisms of his father and his cousin, Tarrant-Arragon?

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far, and hope Ms. Cherry has more books planned for it. In the tradition of Forced Mate and Insufficient Mating Material, Knight's Fork has the flavor and essence of well-turned phraseology, intriguing plot and vibrant characters. I consider this a must read!

Hey all! I gotta tell you about a great Romance Anthology I read recently. It's called Love On a Harley, and it's full of hotties on

Harleys. My favorite story though was by Diane Davis White, called The Man Rid es a Harley.

Susannah can't figure out how she let her sister, Samantha, talk her into riding in some silly parade. She's never ridden on a Harley before and she doesn't even know the guy to whom she's desperately clinging. Susannah can't wait to get away from Duke and his less than desirable personality, especially after she humiliates herself while riding on the back of his bike. However, rather than dropping her off at her car as she anticipated, Duke takes Susannah to his parents place.

Unbeknownst to Susannah there's a reason her sister asked her to ride with Duke. Duke is well aware of the trouble Susannah is in, and Samantha knows Duke can help. After spending time with Susannah, Duke is pretty sure Samantha was out to do some matchmaking as well, and his parents seem to agree. Duke knows he get Susannah out of the scrape she's in, and he has a feeling falling for her won't be such a bad idea after all.

The Man Rides a Harley is a great, sweet, quick story. The chemistry between Susannah and Duke is immediately obvious to everyone but them. Despite their initial resistence to each other, their feelings are so strong, you know it's gonna last. Be sure to check out this fun story from Diane Davis White and all the other great stories, from some truly lovely authors in Love On a Harley.

Romance and Laughter. A Grand Read!

This is a light hearted romp that covers all the bases. From The Cat Dudley’s antics to those of the slightly eccentric, though lovable bachelors who occupy Falgannon Island, this book is guaranteed to delight you. Take two-hundred and thirteen love-starved bachelors on an island cursed against love, add one determined and beautiful woman, who owns that island, and toss in a wildly independent and discriminating cat and you have a recipe for great fun. Oh yes, don’t forget to stir in one green-eyed, black-haired Irishman with a determination to own the island that’s nearly as strong as his determination to have the woman who is the current owner, and you have the icing on the cake!

Deborah MacGillivray has written a special tale with her usual magic touch.

This story had me either laughing or crying, or both. Non-stop fun and giggles, wound through with romantic touches guaranteed to delight the most discerning reader. A must read!

Another outstanding book written by author Diane Davis White. Moon Of The Falling Leaves, left me crying a little at the hardship and pain that these characters had to endure. But it also had me laughing and cheering them on when they made the little things seem so touching and poignant. Set during a time in America's history when the white man sought riches and gold and the Indians fought for survival amidst hatred and prejudice, this story is about Jessica Maxell and her children. She followed her husband into the wilderness as he sought riches and land. Soon she found herself lost, alone, bone tired, and struggling to keep her kids safe. Swift Eagle is a Shaman who has lived alone with his heart full of hatred and resentment at what his family has suffered at the hands of the white man. But when his vision foretold that he must help Jessica and her children, he stepped up and willingly helped them, despite resentment and puzzlement at why he was led to come to their rescue. Soon all of their lives would be in grave peril as enemies plotted to enslave them, even kill them if necessary. There's also a forbidden love with intense feelings that would soon develop into a love that couldn't be ignored or fought against, no matter how hard they tried to fight it. I truly enjoyed reading this story. The book came alive in my mind's eye as I could picture the characters as they evolved and went through the many trials and heartaches they would endure before finding true happiness.

"Happy Ever After" at a Time

Alone in the wilderness, Jessica Maxwell finds out just how uncertain life can be when she and her children are stranded on the side of a mountain with winter looming.

The Lakota Warrior, Swift Eagle, has discovered his destiny in the flames of a vision that leads him to help this white family.

Compassion becomes passion and duty becomes desire when Jessica and Swift Eagle are forced to fight for their love, their survival in the old West.

"Moon of the Falling Leaves" is story of many layers. It is a romance, a story of personal growth, a glimpse into the past, and a wonderful example of ‘love will prevail.’ The story takes place in 1870 in the Rocky Mountains.

When we first meet the heroine, Jessica Maxwell, she is in a difficult situation. Ms. White does an awesome job creating Jessica. She is a woman that lives by the 1870 rules. And does through the entire story. The character of Jessica is heart warming and sincere. The way she deals with the issues at hand is how a woman of that time would have. I enjoy this….I enjoyed reading a historical where the characters very much limited by the time I.e. the social standards. Jessica, however, is not a whinny woman. She accepts what fate has dealt her and moves on. Because of this attitude she doesn’t become bitter and people find themselves wanting to help her. People that in normal situations would have turned a blind eye.

The hero, Swift Eagle, a Lakota Sioux Shaman, hesitates to engage in any thing more than is required of him. He is honest with Jessica that he is simply there because of a vision. Swift Eagle retains this honesty through the story. He never denies his feelings for Jessica but is also frank in that a relationship between an Indian and a White woman is just not possible. In the beginning, Swift Eagle declares he is a man accustomed to a lonely life, without companionship. But after a short time with Jessica and her delightful children he is rethinking that.

The story is mainly focused on Jessica, Swift Eagle and her children. Most of the secondary cast isn’t introduced until the last quarter of the book. Jessica’s four children are each written with their own personality and role in the story. Grace, Jessica’s only daughter and third child, is however the most engaging. From sticking her tongue out at the bad guy to asking Swift Eagle if he is going to sleep in bed with her mom like her dad did, Grace adds to the story. Just when I was sure that the biggest road block to the happily ever after ending laid in Jessica and Swift Eagle’s personal trauma, enter Charlie Hawkins. Hawkins is vile in every sense of the word.

"Moon of the Falling Leaves" is definitely a five book story. I would challenge any reader not to find Jessica endearing, feel a deep sadness for Swift Eagle, smile for Grace, and feel contempt for Charlie Hawkins. It was a story that kept returning to my thoughts as all glad love stories should.

I just finished “Moon of the Falling Leaves” by Diane Davis White, and I am amazed. It is obvious that Ms White did a lot of research for this western novel. To emphasize something in the story, she’ll use a word from the Lakota Sioux dialog and then transparently fit the explanation into the story. Rather than let them starve, he teaches the children and Jessica how to survive.
Swift Eagle slowly wins Jessica’s heart and the devotion of her children, but another dream shows Jessica standing with a white man. Swift Eagle knows he must take her back to her people: their love is not meant to be. When he takes the family to a town, Jessica falls into the hands of unscrupulous people. What will happen to Jessica, her family, and Swift Eagle? You’ll have to buy the book to find out.
This is a very talented writer who can spin words to create an earlier time. She will take you back to 1870 and keep you spellbound the entire novel. Diane weaves personality into her characters until you seem to know them, and the romance between Jessica and Swift Eagle slowly builds to a climax
It takes real talent to write a believable novel about 1870, but Diane White pulls it off without a problem. Can you tell that I really loved this novel?

Jessica does not know what to make of the Indian when he appears at her camp. He introduces himself as Swift Eagle and proclaims the Great Spirit sent him a vision to help her off the mountain. It is hard to believe an Indian would assist a white family. He explains how he stayed out of view, when he saw her man fall ill, not wishing to be shot. Now alone, going down the mountain will be dangerous. He will show her the best way. Swift Eagle believes this is his destiny. As the journey begins, Jessica and her children must learn to trust Swift Eagle, the same way he must set his differences aside and trust them. The journey ahead is nothing as treacherous as learning to soften their hearts and become friends.

The months of travel indeed shows hardships each much endure. Diane Davis White pens a poignant tale that really grabbed this reader. She tells a descriptive story of discipline, trust and love in a time where hatred and prejudice abounded among many. This is a light hearted romp that covers all the bases. Take two-hundred-plus love-starved bachelors on an island cursed against love, add one determined and beautiful woman, who owns that island, and toss in a wildly independent and discriminating cat and you have a recipe for great fun. Jago Mershan comes to town bent on doing mischief to Asha Montgomerie's business as part of a family plot to destroy the Montgomeries as their father was destroyed by Ahsa's grandfather. One look at Asha, however, and he has a change of heart. Asha Montgomerie is a young woman who takes care of her own--namely the people who live and work in her tiny community. Rather reclusive when it comes to men, keeping herself to herself is no longer an option when Jago Mershan walks through the door of her café, The Windmill. The instant attraction between the pair gives rise to much speculation by the locals, a comical crew of folks--signature characters that enhance Ms. MacGillivray's work--whose antics keep the reader entertained. Not to mention the juke box that plays oldies from 1964 over and over again. It seems The Windmill has a pair of ghostly lovers who 'hang out' in their favorite booth on occasion. And there is, of course, a nameless cat--a stray who adopted Jago, though the man refutes ownership until the cat gets under his skin. A story by Ms. MacGillivray without a cat is not complete. Ms MacGillivray has once again proven her prolific and undeniable talent as a story teller. Brava! This is the 2nd installment of the Sisters of Colford Hall Series! Can't wait for the next book!

The annual Scarlet Boa contest put on by Stella Cameron for 2006 was a victory for me. Since I kept promising to have my picture taken with the boa and send it on, I have finally done so---a year later.

Stella Cameron loved this! She said she laughed despite a miserable cold. It doesn't hurt that she's one of my favorite authors!

THE MAN HAS A SWEET TOOTH - Diane Davis White - Sadie the Shady Angel and her mentor Pricilla are back into the swing of things to help two strangers make a match. How they take the two diverse personalities of sweets loving Joe Spellings and Leonora Cullpepper, a complete health food addict makes for a sweet tasting morsel of a story! Bottom line on this story is that the author has a marvelous sense of humor and though not the leads in this story, the reader is definitely going to remember Sadie the Shady Angel and Pricilla as these two angels argue over how to get Joe and Leonora together! The dialogs are witty, and the sexual attraction is strong making the reader smile from start to finish and the recipe for Easy Raspberry Brownies sounds positively decadent!
